The Need for Power (I)

“Say to God, ‘How awesome are Your works! Through the greatness of Your power, Your enemies shall submit themselves to You.’” (Psalm 66:3, New King James Version).

This is the key Bible verse for the “Come and See” devotional today.

At the start of Genesis 1, the Bible refers to the immediate challenges faced by God when He created heaven and earth: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1 verses 1 -2, New King James Version). If God had stopped at that point and had done no more, then this would have hindered His ultimate desire to fill the earth with His beautiful creatures. However: “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3, New King James Version). Similarly, we will always sit in the dark if we fail to act and to create light: obstacles will only move when a matching force is applied and we need to be empowered, appropriately, to make any visible impact in life.

As believers, we need to understand that the power we need is spiritual and is determined by the platform where our battle is being fought. The Bible states: “for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12, New King James Version). Thus, physical battles are fought with visible weapons and spiritual with invisible forces.

As stated in the key Bible verse above, all enemies of God are subjected to His authority because of His power. God remains the King of kings and He reigns forever through His absolute power. We are aware of the failed attempt of the devil to overthrow God, leading to his defeat and eviction from heaven (read Revelations 12 verse 7). We need power to succeed in this world, where the devil works ceaselessly to cause our defeat and shame. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy”-John 10 verse 10 (a)

We know that the devil is the source of every bad thing in this world and his threefold ministry will never change: this is to steal, kill and destroy the health, joy, peace, and life of human beings. Jesus Christ referred to the spiritual realm of life which directly affects our well-being and said: “from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.” (Matthew 11:12, English Standard Version). Consequently, you need power to possess your possession. You need power to make progress and rise above life challenges and trials.

During the earthly life and ministry of Jesus Christ, demons subjected themselves to His authority and even at His appearances, they would tremble. Apostle Paul later wrote: “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38, English Standard Version).

Let us pray: “Father, grant me the power to help me finish my tasks successfully. Help me to succeed in every challenge of life, ” in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
