In the Potter’s Hand (II)
“But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and all we are the work of your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8, New King James Version).
This is the key Bible verse for our “Come and See” devotional today.
The first of this series of devotionals stated that potters will always make sure that their work is as close to perfection as possible, before it is put on public display. The Most High God is the oldest and the wisest Potter: He is a perfectionist who is preoccupied with improving our lives and so He pays attention to every detail. He is concerned about the end result of every matter and as we are the work of His hands, He will continue to remould us over and over again until He is pleased with the final results.
Potters often engrave their names on their finished works and this identifies each one’s skill and creativity. Our Creator has also engraved His mighty name upon us all, as the Bible confirms: “Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.“ (Isaiah 43:7, New King James Version). We know that God does not begin with perfect materials but instead, He uses base material such as clay, to make perfect objects. For instance, many of Jesus’ disciples were unlearned men; some had unstable characters and the Master craftsman even had to change Peter’s name to ensure his destiny was fulfilled.
One important characteristic of the Potter, The Almighty God, is that He will never put us to shame. No unfinished pot, no matter how humble, will be left with any defects by the Potter. God is too faithful and committed to allow us to die in shame and indeed, He has engraved our names on his palm: “See, I have tattooed your name upon my palm.” (Isaiah 49:16, Living Bible).
The Lord once requested Prophet Jeremiah to go down to the potter’s house where He would give him a message concerning the children of Israel. Jeremiah did as he was told without delay and on arrival, he saw the potter working at the wheel. He observed that: “ .. the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” (Jeremiah 18 :4, New International Version). God later declared that He will do exactly as the potter was doing and so He will not leave us until we have been remoulded to become His very best. Regardless of your current challenges, you will emerge successfully, to the Glory of His Name. You must remain steadfast and never ever give up because the Potter will never forsake the work of His hands.
Let us pray: “Father, make me into what you want me to be, to the Glory of your name,” in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
