A Table Prepared (I)
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.” (Psalm 23:5, New King James Version).
This is the key Bible verse for the “Come and See” devotional today.
This key Bible verse is taken from one of the most familiar psalms of King David. It gives an indication of the power of the Almighty God to do whatever He wants, irrespective of one’s challenges or the strength, power or numbers of one’s opponents.
One must ask: why would the Lord prepare for us a table full of good things in the presence of those people who despise us? Isaiah 14:27 (New King James Version) answers: “for the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?” There is nothing that could ever restrain the power of God to change a person’s situation.
This brings to mind the account of Sarah in the Bible. The Lord accomplished for her something that nobody ever thought could happen in her lifetime. Even Abraham did not believe that they would ever be able to have children. This was how he reacted when the Lord indicated His willingness to become involved. Thus: “Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, ‘shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?’” (Genesis 17:17, New King James Version).
There is no better victory that anyone can ever enjoy or wish for than for something considered impossible to happen in one’s life. In her testimony, the highly elated Sarah said: “God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me. She also said, ‘who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.’” (Genesis 21:6-7, New King James Version). These words further confirm that her miracle was a surprise to everyone.
Sarah duly gave birth to the child of promise, Isaac, who later became a founder of a strong nation: Israel. The miracle of Isaac was a visible one which nobody can deny. This is how God prepares a feast for us even in the presence of our enemies. A feast is not the same as a normal daily meal; it often comes with many delightful varieties of food aimed at giving pleasure to the people taking part.
We know that the Lord is no respecter of persons; what He did for Sarah can be repeated in our own lives too. This knowledge should strengthen a person’s faith and give reassurance that that an unpleasant situation will improve. The ultimate plan of God is for us to have a happy ending irrespective of how difficult our current challenges might seem. The Most High God is not limited by time or by even the devil. When our strength fails, He is always there to complement our weaknesses.
Let us pray: “Father, I receive grace to trust you absolutely. By your power, disappoint every evil expectation in my life” in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
