A Table Prepared (II)

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.” (Psalm 23:5, New King James Version).

This is the key Bible verse for the “Come and See” devotional today.

The first part of this series of devotionals indicated that the Almighty God cannot be restrained from performing His mighty deeds. Once He makes up His mind to bless us, it will happen. He has never failed and will not fail you.

In the key Bible verse above, King David was clear about who is capable of preparing a table of honour before us even in the presence of our enemies. It is only God who could do that, because of His dependable and limitless power. When we read 1 Samuel 17, we learn that David was the youngest of the eight sons of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse; David was introduced as a very ambitious but unproven young man. Everybody including his own brothers was convinced that he was on a suicide mission when he volunteered to confront and fight Goliath, the champion of the Philistines.

However, David prevailed over Goliath but instead of using a sword he used a sling and a stone. This miraculous event happened in the full view of everyone, including the doubters and enemies of David. The Almighty God prepared a resounding victory for David who later became King of Israel; this was done without regard to any opinions and expectations of the people. The same people who first mocked David finally rejoiced and celebrated with him.

The appearance of every new day is a miracle in itself. Every day we experience a table prepared by the mercy of God even in the presence of our adversaries. If those adversaries had their way, they would not want us to wake up and see the rising sun. However the Lord prepares each new day to present another opportunity for us to move nearer to our destiny. As we learn in Lamentations 3:22-23 (New King James Version): “through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

Finally: we should know that the ultimate miracle is when enemies become our friends. There is no better occasion than dining and wining with friends. Only the Most High God can turn the hearts of former foes to become our allies. This is achievable only through total obedience to the infallible words of God. Proverbs 16:7 (English Standard Version) states, “when a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him”.

When our ways please God, He stands between us and the evil plans of enemies, to their disappointment. Job 5:12 (Amplified Version) states: “He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise or anything of (lasting) worth”.

Let us pray: “Father, I receive grace to trust you absolutely. By your power, disappoint every evil expectation in my life” in Jesus’ Mighty Name,  Amen.
