A New Song

“And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” (Psalms 40:3, 21st Century King James Version).

This is the key Bible verse for our “Come and See” devotional today.

There is a story behind every song. We often sing different melodies to express our inner feelings, or reflect on our current situations or even recall past experiences. The victory of David over Goliath was turned into a new song by the Israelites in which they extolled David and expressed their disapproval of King Saul.

The Bible states that: “when the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with timbrels and lyres. As they danced, they sang: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.’” (1 Samuel 18:6-7, New International Version).

New situations are often depicted by new songs: typical examples include when an impossible task suddenly becomes possible; or, an unyielding obstacle moves, one’s direction in life suddenly becomes clearer; promises, hopes and dreams turn into a reality, or a despondent loser suddenly wins. All these situations are often followed by a new song which is typically sung loudly for everyone to come and see what the Lord has done.

As indicated in today’s key Bible verse, God is the only one who puts new songs in the mouths of His people. New songs are the output of God’s mighty deeds. In the Bible we read: “behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” (Isaiah 43:19, New King James Version). He creates new opportunities every day. After their great escape from slavery in Egypt and their crossing of the Red Sea, the nation of Israel sang a new song: “then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: ‘I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.’” (Exodus 15:1, New International Version).

The Almighty God works every day as Jesus commented: “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” (John 5:17, New King James Version). All His works are new and original: “then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’” (Revelations 21:5, New King James Version).

Let us pray: “Father, by your mercy, put a new song of triumph in my mouth,” in Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
